The Bunyans

The Bunyans

By Audrey Wood

About this book

Grade Level Equivalent: 3.9
Lexile Measure: 980L
Guided Reading Level: P
Age: Age 8, Age 9, Age 10
Genre: Adventure, Fables, Folk Tales and Myths
Subject: Family Life, Literature, Literature Appreciation, United States

Overview

In addition to being a great take on the Paul Bunyan myth, I use The Bunyans during author studies of both Audrey Wood and David Shannon. Students love trying to locate the states on the map. I think they view it as a treasure hunt.

Objective

Students will "read globes and maps and follow narrative accounts using them." --Massachusetts History and Social Science Curriculum Framework

Materials

  • The Bunyans by Audrey Wood
  • large wall map of the United States.
  • Post It notes

Set Up and Prepare

Label the Post-it notes with the following: Mt. Ranier, Old Faithful, Arches National Park, Bryce Canyon, Big Sur, Monument Valley, Great Sand Dunes, Mammouth Cave, and Niagra Falls. I like to use the brightly colored Post-it notes so that they really stand out on the map.

Directions

Using the information on the back flap of the book jacket as a guide, work with students to place the Post-it notes on the proper states.

Lesson Extensions

Use the internet to locate and learn more about these natural wonders.
