Gather Spanish Glossaries

In the front of the book, the author provides a brief glossary and pronunciation guide to some Spanish words used in the story. Print these on the chalkboard or on a large chart pad. Review these with the class and ask the children if any of them can add any additional Spanish words or phrases to the list. Invite a Spanish teacher or Spanish-speaking guest into your class to teach the class additional Spanish words and phrases. Locate Mexico and Spain on a map or globe. Ask your guest to explain why people in Mexico speak Spanish, the native language of Spain. Consider having students copy the Spanish glossary into notebooks, illustrating their entries and leaving room for new additions. (Hint: Place a Spanish-English dictionary in the writing corner and encourage children to add new words to their glossaries.)
