Hello Friends (to the tune of "Frere Jacques") by Risa Young

(Everyone sings):

Hello friends. Hello friends.

So glad you came. So glad you came.

We've got to get to know you.

We've got to get to know you.

So, tell us your name. Tell us your name!

Child or adult responds:

My name is _______, my name is_______.

(Everyone sings):

We're so glad you came, we're so glad you came.

ACTIVITY

During the first few days of school, invite everyone to the meeting area to sing the hello song. Let children sing and introduce themselves; include the adults, as well. This will help both children and adults learn each other's names. Children who may be feeling shy will be more comfortable having their teachers sing their names with them.

Next, show the group a tape recorder and explain that you will record them as they sing. Invite everyone to sing along. Then play the recorded version so everyone can listen.

Incorporate rhythm instruments with the song. Pass around a basket and invite each child to choose an instrument. Remember to tell them the name of the instrument that they chose to help expand their vocabulary and let them make a few sounds as well. When everyone has received an instrument, invite them all to play along as they sing the hello song. Record this musical instrument version too.

Remember: Some children and adults may not be comfortable singing in front of others, especially during the first few days of school. Some may be more comfortable just saying their names. Additionally, some children may need to observe the activity before they feel ready to participate. Your enthusiasm and calm approach should have everyone singing and playing instruments within days!

TAKE HOME ACTIVITY

What Do You Sing at Home? Send a note home to families requesting that they send in the lyrics to special songs that they sing with their children. Explain that the class will be using songs to learn about each other. The song can be in their home language, a special lullaby, or even a rhyme or poem that they recite together. Invite family members to come in and teach them to the class.

Curriculum Connection: LANGUAGE AND LISTENING

More Fun With a Tape Recorder. A tape recorder is a wonderful tool to use to encourage children to speak and have fun with language. Bring a small group of children together and invite them to say their names. Then play the recording so they can listen. When a child recognizes his voice on the tape, ask him to raise his hand or touch his nose.
