Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system. It is so big, you could fit all of the other planets inside it. The Great Red Spot on Jupiter is a huge spinning storm. The storm is at least twice the size of Earth. The Great Red Spot is the biggest storm in the universe. It has been spinning for at least 300 years.

Teachable Moment

A domesticated animal is an animal that can be trained to live with humans. Dogs, cats, and rabbits are all animals that can be domesticated. But dogs were probably the first domesticated animals. They have been living with humans for about 10,000 years! Domesticated dogs communicate with humans and other dogs in many different ways. An excited dog wags its tail. An angry or threatened dog bares its teeth.

Have you ever played with a hula hoop? A hula hoop is a toy. It got its name from the hula dance, a Hawaiian dance that is performed using a similar hip motion as the one you use to keep a hula hoop in motion. Variations of the hula hoop have been around for centuries. But in 1958, the plastic version of the toy was first introduced to the United States.

In the United States, people who travel into space are called astronauts. The word astronaut comes from the Greek words for "star" (astro) and "sailor" (naut). Latin and Greek are very old languages. Memorial Day is an American holiday that honors the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines who have died at war. Memorial Day began after the Civil War. Archaeology is the study of human and material remains. Material remains are the tools, homes, tombs, temples, ruins, and even trash that were left behind by people many hundreds or thousands of years ago. Archaeologists study these objects to discover how people lived in the past.

How do you observe Memorial Day? Some towns and cities in the United States hold parades and have services. Flags and flowers are often placed on the graves of soldiers and other veterans. At some services, “Taps," a song that is played at military funerals, is played on a bugle. Flags are flown at half-mast, or halfway down the flagpole, to show respect for the dead.

Even though we often use the words bug and insect to mean the same thing, bugs and insects are different. Bugs are a type of insect. They are distinct because of they way they eat. Bugs feed through a stylet, which is a long, pointed mouthpiece, shaped sort of like a beak. Bugs suck up their food through the stylet.

A journal is a daily record. It can be a personal record, such as a diary. It can also refer to a newspaper. A journalist is someone who reports the news for a newspaper, magazine, television show, or website. Journalism is the profession of reporting the news.

Look at the relationship between the words in bold. Now, select a career that you might like to try. Would you like to be an artist? A biologist? A teacher? A writer? See if you can list and define two words that have the same base word.

Fun Fact

Baseball, football, and lacrosse players sometimes put black stripes under their eyes. The stripes help to block out the bright sun so that they can see the ball better. Players started doing this in the 1940s. Over the years, players have used burnt cork and shoe polish to make the stripes. Today, many players use stickers.

This popular English nursery rhyme is about ladybugs, which are known as ladybirds in England. Ladybugs eat aphids, a type of insect that feeds on crops, damaging them. By eating the aphids, ladybugs protect the crops. After the harvest, farmers would sometimes burn their fields. They wanted ladybugs to fly away from the fields so that they would remain safe and later return to eat more aphids.

Primates use their fingernails to help them climb trees or dig for food. When we evolved from being primates, our claws flattened. Now, we still use them as tools, but they have different functions. We use our nails for many things, such as scratching an itch, peeling fruits, opening cans, undoing knots, and so on.

Have you ever wondered why some dogs turn around in circles before they curl up for a nap? Dogs do this out of instinct, or a natural impulse or habit. Scientists think there are several different explanations for this. Some scientists think a dog's instinct to do this comes from their wild dog ancestors. Wild dogs would circle to trample down grass and scare away pests. They did this to make their beds more comfortable. Now, even though there is no grass to trample, domestic dogs continue to do it, too!

Did you know that the way a cricket chirps corresponds to the temperature? The hotter the temperature, the more a cricket will chirp. In fact, you can use the number of chirps per 14 seconds to determine the outdoor temperature. The Old Farmer's Almanac, an old farming reference book, created a formula to do so.
