Nicholas decided to apply for the Scholastic Kids Press Corps partly because he liked the idea of “kids writ[ing] a magazine for kids.” Having written and edited for his middle school newspaper, Nicholas has already started honing his craft for his job as a Scholastic Kid Reporter.
Beyond journalism, Nicholas has a love of biology, which could be a potential career path. “I would like to be an immunologist,” he says. “I’ve always been fascinated by the body’s ability to defend itself against pathogens.”
He also has a burning interest in Social Studies, his favorite subject, and he stays informed about current events by reading the New York Times and The Detroit News.
In one of his early stories, Nicholas looked at his home city of Detroit from a journalist’s perspective, recognizing that even in the midst of political troubles and problems with the motor industry, Detroit is still a great city. From its strong support of the arts, to the important auto industry, Nicholas has interviewed community leaders that make Detroit what it is.
“I love living in Detroit!” he says. “Everyone should come and visit the D and see all of its unique sights and culture.”
Nicholas also has a strong artistic side, playing both the clarinet and the piano in his school band. Thanks to the city’s Detroit River, Nicholas is also able to enjoy sailing and swimming activities.
Nicholas looks forward to working as a Kid Reporter.
“I read [the news] daily to keep myself informed about local and world events, so I would like the opportunity to write about those events too,” he says.
