Justin Lim
Bio
My name is Justin Lim and I am a Read 180 English teacher at Rosemead High School (RHS) in Southern California. Rosemead is a beautifully diverse middle-class suburb with strong Asian and Hispanic influences. Though I'm now part of the RHS family, my path to a career in education has been anything but ordinary. After earning by B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, San Diego, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as a reservist, where I am still serving. While attending the University of California Hastings, School of Law, I took a leave of absence to deploy to Fallujah, Iraq. Following the end of my tour, I decided to enter the educational field, earning my teaching credential from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
I believe you have to set students up for success, one step at a time. Every task has to be scaffolded so well that each student can successfully accomplish it. As teachers, we have to give meaningful praise and motivate our kids to want more. We also have to tailor our lessons to our students by learning what topics motivate them and how to use that knowledge for the benefit of the entire class. To do this means that we ourselves have to be students of our students if we hope to make a lasting impact.
I've dedicated myself to personally making sure my students participate in class every day. Nearly all of them admit that they've read more books for my class than they've ever read before. Putting aside test scores and data though, the greatest success — and perhaps the only one that matters in the end — is when hope for a better future is born. I look forward to sharing the many procedures, principles, and practices we use to make our class successful. And I invite you to read my posts with hopes that some of it will be use to you.
