Bio

Hazel Hutchins is the author of over thirty picture books, including One Dark Night, illustrated by Susan Kathleen Hartung.   Her awards include the Writers Guild of Alberta Award for Children's Literature and the Shining Willow Young Readers' Choice Award, amongst others.  One of her titles was also named a White Raven Selection by the International Youth Library in Munich.

Hutchins most recent book is A Second is a Hiccup, illustrated by Kady MacDonald Denton.  For a child who wonders, "How long will that take?", this is a book that explains and celebrates all the seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years of life!  "Someone once told me that when her kids asked 'how soon until...' she sometimes used expressions such as 'in Sesame Street,' which would refer to one hour," says Hutchins. "It is the same idea as 'thee sleeps until Christmas' but there was something a bit sad to me about time being reduced to TV bits.  I decided to see if I could find another way to describe time.  When the writing began to flow in poetic form—and when I came up with the engaging title line, A Second is a Hiccup—I knew I had begun a labor of love.  It is my sincere hope that children will enjoy finding and celebrating among the pages, the many ways they can spend their time."

Hazel Hutchins currently lives in Alberta, Canada.
