Bio

Dimitrea Tokunbo is the illustrator of three children's books, Sidewalk Chalk: Poems of the City by Carole Boston Weatherford, Has Anybody Lost a Glove? by G. Francis Johnson and Amadi's Snowman by Katia Novet Saint-Lot. She has written two children's books for Scholastic, Together, illustrated by Jennifer Gwynne Oliver and the upcoming title, The Sound of Kwanzaa, illustrated by Lisa Cohen. Tokunbo has both written and illustrated stories for Read and Rise Magazine published by Scholastic Inc. and the Urban League to encourage literacy for inner city children. She has also illustrated for Cricket Magazine and did the cover art for the February 2005 issue.

"I want to represent the beauty of all children," says Tokunbo. "I feel that growing up biracial, having a direct connection to two different cultures in the American context, gives my art a spirit and spark that speaks to the children who were overlooked when I was a child."

Educated at Moore College of Art for Women in Philadelphia, PA, Tokunbo interned at WDAS Radio and the African American History Museum of Philadelphia.  Tokunbo is a member of the Children's Book Writer's and Illustrator's Society. She enjoys visiting schools and libraries to share her stories with children. Dimitrea Tokunbo lives in New York City with her two daughters.
