Bio

Deborah Lee Rose was born in Philadelphia and educated at Cornell University. In addition to writing children’s books, she has planned and written major exhibits on paleontology, nanotechnology, seismology, astronomy and more for UC Berkeley’s Lawrence of Science. Rose began writing for young audiences when her children were born. She combines her fascination for science with her love of language to write books that children and adults can read on many levels.

Her curiosity about marine animals prompted her to write Into the A, B, Sea: An Ocean Alphabet and One Nighttime Sea: An Ocean Counting Rhyme, both published by Scholastic Press. In these companion books, Rose uses rhyme and the rhythm of the ocean to introduce scientific concepts, which are illuminated by the stunning paper-cut illustrations of Steve Jenkins. A reviewer for School Library Journal wrote that One Nighttime Sea "will make a splash with youngsters practicing their counting, learning about sea life, or simply before bed time." In her newest books The Twelve Days of Kindergarten and The Twelve Days of Winter, Rose takes a humorous look at school life, inspired by her children’s experiences and her own.

Rose has contributed to Spark Your Child’s Success in Math and Science, published by the renowned Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS) program at the Lawrence Hall of Science. She is a member of SCBWI and has been profiled in Something About the Author. She lives in the San Francisco Bay area.
