Born in 1948 in Portsmouth, Virginia, Cheryl Willis Hudson received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Oberlin College and went on to do postgraduate work at Northeastern University. She worked as an art editor, graphic designer, and art director for several prominent publishing houses before founding Just Us Books with her husband, writer Wade Hudson. Dedicated to providing African-American children with books and learning materials in which they can see themselves portrayed positively, Just Us Books has produced everything from board books for toddlers to collective biographies of African-American heroes.
Hudson has written and published poems and picture books for children. Together with Wade Hudson, she edited the collection How Sweet the Sound: African-American Songs for Children, the critically acclaimed companion volume to Pass It On: African-American Poetry for Children. Hudson enjoys African art and history. She lives with her husband in New Jersey.
