Bio

Known for his innovative photographic picture books, Bruce McMillan has been seeing the world through a lens since his father gave him his first camera for his fifth birthday. He got his first professional camera at the age of nine, and practiced his hobby constantly through school, becoming the photographer for his high school newspaper. Majoring in biology at the University of Maine at Orono, McMillan spent much of his time learning a different sort of photography at the local public television station, where he continued after graduation, starting as a cameraman before moving into directing and producing.

In 1973, McMillan became caretaker of McGee Island off the coast of Maine. The lifestyle gave him a chance to work on his writing skills, and at the end of his stay he wrote and photographed his first book. Since then, McMillan has produced more than 25 critically acclaimed books for children, and has become well-known for introducing early concepts in refreshingly innovative ways, as in Eating Fractions, Time to..., and One, Two, One Pair. He has also created three books of visual puns, one in collaboration with his son, Brett Brownrigg.

A frequent contributor to such New England publications as Yankee and Down East, McMillan continues to make his home in Maine. He enjoys sharing his experience in children's books with others, and has taught classes in children's book writing at both the University of Southern Maine and the University of New Hampshire.
