Alexis Wiseman is in the fourth grade in New York City.
While Alexis enjoys listening to Broadway show tunes, her real passion lies in reading and writing. She has been writing fiction since pre-school and is looking forward to reporting non-fiction as a Scholastic Kid Reporter.
Alexis was previously a contestant in the Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators contest. She submitted her story “If Kids Ruled the World” and won third prize in the New York Tri-State Region!
“I enjoy writing stories and describing experiences,” she said.
This is particularly true when it comes to her home of New York City. In a story about the city, Alexis interviewed faculty at her school as well as a local clothing shop owner about one of the city’s biggest attractions: its culturally rich and diverse population.
“My community is the world,” she said. “The streets are filled with restaurants serving food from many countries including Japan, China, India, Italy, Greece, and Mexico.” In spite of the differences found among these cultures, Alexis notes that it is the similarities between people that are most important.
“Although people come from many different places they learn they are alike in many different ways,” she said.
When not reading, writing, or reporting, Alexis lets out her athletic side by ice skating and playing tennis, soccer and golf. Alexis also plays the clarinet in her school band. She enjoys cooking with her family and collecting sea shells when she can get out to the ocean.
On being a kid reporter, Alexis says, “I want to learn how to write better and tell kids about our exciting world.”
