I teach 4 year olds. Every year as the end of the year gets closer, I too order caterpillars and we teach all about their life cycle. Taking every opportunity to integrate all the disciplines; science, language arts, art, math and even dance. I work together with each child on a book in which they illustrate the stages of the life cycle of the butterfly. I have had kids come back when they much older and tell me they still have their book. During the study I talk to the children about how are growing like the caterpillars they will be going off to kindergarten and like the butterflies they will go away. As a cul-minating activity we release the butterflies during their "graduation" ceremony. I make sure to tell them when they go away, I will always remember them; as they will remember watching beatuful butterflies develop from caterpillars.
