Thanks for writing. Here's how I assess the top 100 words. I meet students individually to have them read the words. Then highlight words missed and make 2 lists, for home and school. Then I divide words up into four days for spelling pretest. Again I create highlighted lists for students' writing folder and one for parents to have at home. I explain to parents that students will be retested in Jan. and ask them to put highlighted list on their refrigerator and review a few words each week. For students who achieve at 85% or more, they move on to the next 150 words. The goal by the end of 2nd grade is to spell the top 250 words. We post the most frequently missed words on our word wall for reference.
