I have been trying to get my third graders to think about what they are reading. This year I started having them write response letters to me once a week that include a summary of the reading, connections, inferences, etc and what they want me to know about their reading. They are really struggling with this. Is the method for third grade the same as you described? What is the best way to begin with students who have experience with only right or wrong answers? Thanks!
