Thanks for your question! The difficult part with mixed grouping in core content areas is that the low students always struggle and need help while the higher students always have to be the helpers. After a while this can wear on the students. The lower ones will start to see themselves as strugglers and the higher ones typically don't get the opportunity to not be the best at something.
If this is the setting you are using then I would say you would still need to do pull out or one on one instruction. You might even want to look into goal setting for your students. That way each child no matter what level will have a math goal they are working on.
