The Terrorist Booktalk

About This Book

From the moment her eleven-year-old brother Billy is killed by a terrorist bomb, Laura Williams has only one interest. Revenge.

Her typical American family never really liked living in London to begin with, but after five months of adjustment, the Williamses were getting used to their new lives. Both Laura and Billy had made new friends at the international school they attended-friends from around the world, friends who know what it means to live with terrorism and hatred, but had learned to adjust and get along. But now Laura sees everyone as a potential suspect in her brother's murder; even her classmates. But who? And why?

Laura's parents are dazed, unable to cope with Billy's death. Her friends are alienated by her suspicion. Laura feels alone in her quest to make her brother's death have meaning . . . until she befriends beautiful, enigmatic, and wealthy Jehran, who needs Laura's help. After a life of relative freedom in London, Jehran is being forced by her brother to return to her country and marry an old man with a traditional household and two wives. She has enough money to escape to the United States, and she plans on passing herself off as a young boy. There is only one thing she needs to complete the disguise . . . Billy Williams's passport. By saving Jehran, Laura reasons, she will have given Billy's death a purpose.

And so Laura goes along with Jehran's scheme. Naive Laura Williams has suspected everyone but the only person who has a motive for her brother's death. Luckily, her cosmopolitan school friends are not so trusting.

In a climactic and terrifying airport scene, Laura realizes that Jehran is the person responsible for Billy's death. Laura's friends have come to the same realization and have called the police, who arrive on the scene just as Laura is confronting Jehran. Although she tries to escape, the police apprehend Jehran before she can get away. The Williamses return to the United States in order to try to put the pieces of their lives back together.
