When Martha the dog eats Granny's Alphabet Soup, the letters go to her brain instead of her stomach and she begins speaking words! The label on Granny's Alphabet Soup promises "every letter in every can," but at the Granny Soup Company, the new owner decides she can increase profits by reducing the number of letters in the soup. She fires 13 of her 26 letter inspectors and expects that nobody will notice the difference.

But Martha notices. After eating her first bowl of the modified Granny's Alphabet Soup, she says "goo oup" when she means "good soup" and "ohigiwog" when she means, "something is wrong." Martha is literally at a loss for words! And who will love her now that she is like every other dog and can no longer talk? Martha is determined to speak again and she ultimately discovers what the new owner has done to the soup. She sets out to restore order at the soup company and makes sure that the promise of "every letter in every can" is fully honored.
