About This Book
Colleen Murphy is convinced that fourth grade is going to be the greatest year of her life. Her best friend, Sarah, is in her class, she loves her teacher, Mrs. Johnston, and she has no trouble doing her schoolwork. Even the stuck-up, complaining Marsha can't ruin Colleen's good mood. All is well until a wasp flies in through Colleen's classroom window and causes her beloved teacher to topple off her stool and break her leg. The next dark cloud that appears is the mean substitute teacher, Miss Haversham, and Colleen figures things can't get much worse — that is until Colleen's mother announces that she is going to replace Miss Haversham and become the new substitute teacher!
Colleen's mother thinks that being a substitute teacher will be fun for both of them, but Colleen feels her perfect life slipping away. Besides the embarrassment of having her world invaded when her mother bosses her classmates around and writes "messy work" on all her friends' papers, Colleen now has a complete stranger taking care of her and her younger siblings while her mother is at work. When the other kids call Colleen a teacher's pet, and her mother accidentally starts a fire during a science experiment, Colleen is convinced that fourth grade is indeed a jinx. Use this humorous novel to explore parent/child relationships, as well as spark discussion about peer pressure.
