Fish, a twelve-year-old Irish boy from a poor farming family, takes a job as a courier for his uncle and is immediately captured by pirates who want the package he's carrying.

As Fish makes friends with the kind-hearted pirate captain Cobb, Cobb's wife, Melinda, and a surprisingly intelligent lummox named Moravius, he falls in love with the seagoing life on board the pirate ship Scurvy Mistress.

But when Fish becomes aware of a mutiny headed by a particularly nasty pirate named Scab, it's up to him and some fellow pirates still loyal to Cobb to thwart Scab's dastrardly plan.
