About This Book

Set in 19th century Korea, The Firekeeper's Son is a story centered around the traditional communication method of lighting bonfires as a way of reassuring the king that all is well in his land. Sang-hee's father lights the first in a series of bonfires every evening, until the day he breaks his ankle. Then young Sang-hee must replace his father in his very important and adult job as Firekeeper. Park does an excellent job showing the young boy's thoughts and waffling decisions as he prepares to take his father's place. Eloquent writing and beautiful watercolor illustrations contribute to the compelling realism of this picture book.
