The Dragon's Son Booktalk

About This Book

My name is Arthur, son of Uther, the Dragon. It is my goal to unite all of England under one king, who will rule with wisdom and honor. There will be legends and stories told about me, but here is the true tale of my life, my struggles, and my realm.

My name in Nimue, and for the first sixteen years of my life, I was a ferryman s daughter. That summer, a bard named Myrddin came and stayed with us until I agreed to marry him, and travel with him to many places. He was like no man I had ever known with his strange insights and visions of the future. A new king would come one day soon, he told me, a king who would unite all of England in peace. Myrddin was determined to do anything he could to bring this new king to power. He sacrificed his family, his friends, all that he had. Was the sacrifice too great? Only he could tell you I cannot.

My name is Morgan, and when I was but four, I saw my father murdered and my mother, lying in his blood, raped until she went mad with grief and anger. My older sister and I were taken to the northern provinces to be brought up my Morgausa, our mother s sister. It was not a happy childhood, for she didn t want us, and didn t hesitate to let us know it. I had nightmares of the horrors I had seen, and soon learned to scream silently when they woke me up, night after night, so as not to disturb the household. When I would not be controlled and married off as easily as my sister, I was sent to live at a convent. But even among the sisters, I still dreamed, screaming silently, so no one could hear. I would never forget what I had seen, nor the two men who had taken both my parents from me.

I am Arthur, the child conceived during that night of lust and death, half brother to Morgan. I am the king Myrddin predicted, who sought to unite England, who built a place called Camelot, and this is my story. But it is not the one you may have heard before, for this story is more truth than legend, more dark than light, just as life itself is. So gather round, and listen to these stories, from those who loved me, those I loved, and those who schemed to betray me. Listen well, and learn the truth of Arthur, the Dragon s Son.
