Teaching Tip: Organizing Student Information

  • Grades: PreK–K, 1–2, 3–5, 6–8, 9–12

At the beginning of the year I create an AppleWorks database with the information I know about my students. Then I either send the page home or have the page at Open House for the parents to check and complete. I like having the names of siblings and pets, too, so I can help with spelling when we are writing about our family or pets. When the pages are returned I bind them in a book for quick access to the information. It's easy to grab when we go on a field trip or for emergencies. I do keep the book in a secure area so that the information is guarded. See a sample page from my book (PDF).
