Submersible

  • Grades: 6–8, 9–12

Any vessel capable of operating underwater such as the bathysphere and bathyscaphe, invented for research in oceanography can be called a submersible. True submersibles, however, are steerable, like the Alvin, an oceanographic vessel first launched in 1964. The most successful submersible is the nuclear submarine, which is capable of remaining underwater for lengthy periods of time.
