Lucky Wands of Gold Craft

These St. Patrick’s Day wands will spread good luck everywhere!

  • Grades: PreK–K, 1–2, 3–5

Let students create their own good luck for St. Patrick’s Day with these magical wands of gold.

What You Need:

  • 9- by 12-inch black construction paper, one sheet per student
  • 9- by 12-inch gold construction paper, one sheet per student
  • 9- by 12-inch yellow construction paper, one sheet per student
  • Scissors
  • Pencils
  • Butcher paper or streamers in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple, enough for each student to have one of each color
  • Glue
  • 12-inch wooden dowels, one per student

What You Do:

  1. Have your students fold a 9- by 12-inch piece of black construction paper in half and use a pencil to draw a large pot shape.
  2. Instruct your students to keep the paper folded and cut out the pot shape. This should yield two black pots of the same size and shape.
  3. Help your students cut one strip, about 24- by 1-inch, from each color of the butcher paper or cut a 24-inch strip from each color of the streamers.
  4. If you are using butcher paper, help your students tightly roll the strips so they stay partially curled on their own.
  5. Have the children glue one end of each colored strip to the bottom of one of the black pot shapes. They should glue all of the strips on the same side of the pot. The curly ends should hang down and create a rainbow.
  6. The students can then cut out circles for coins from the yellow and gold construction paper.
  7. Next, the students can glue the yellow and gold circles together across the top of the black pot on the side opposite the colored strips. The circles should look like a mound of gold filling the pot.
  8. Have the students glue one end of the dowel to the side of the pot where the colored strips are glued.
  9. The students can complete the pot of gold by gluing the second black pot shape to the back of the first one. The second pot should cover the area where the wand and butcher paper strips are glued.
