A Journey About to Begin
Paint The Wind, by Pam Muñoz Ryan
- Grades: 3–5, 6–8
Paint the Wind is a heartwarming adventure story about a young girl's self-discovery. Maya, an orphan raised by a strict grandmother, has always longed to ride horses. When her grandmother dies, she moves to Wyoming where she meets Artemisia, the other main character in this story—a horse. The tale that unfolds is told from both Maya’s and Artemisia’s point of view.
Great-aunt Vi and Payton are other lovable main characters "created out of my imagination," says author Pam Muñoz Ryan. Not knowing exactly how she feels about these new family members, Maya at first focuses on the horses they keep. She has some trouble learning to ride, but she is determined.
When she's stuck by herself on a mountain and must get back to the camp, she faces many problems. Can she overcome them? Read it and find out!
You don't have to be a fan of horses to love this book. I lost myself in the story and you will do the same. The name "Maya" means "a journey about to begin."
This book is a true journey.
