Ideas: Finding a Topic

This passage is excerpted from Daily Trait Warm-Ups by Ruth Culham.

Read this example:

I’d rather cook than eat out at a restaurant. I like to watch cooking shows on TV. The cake I made for my brother’s birthday was not pretty, but it sure did taste good.

Choose a topic from the example. Write a draft using details that make the topic clear.

Think About:

  • Have I chosen a topic that I really like?
  • Do I have something new to say about this topic?
  • Am I writing about what I know and care about?
  • Have I gathered enough information so that I’m ready to write?
