Gung Hey Fat Choy: Chinese New Year

  • Grades: PreK–K, 1–2, 3–5

Mentor teacher Andrea Spillett shares what her class did for the Chinese New Year. Try them out with your students, or use these ideas to start your own classroom traditions!

We invited a guest speaker, a parent of a student, to come in and talk about the Chinese New Year. The students got to eat fried rice with chopsticks and learn the Lion Dance.

A terrific story to read about the Chinese New Year is Lion Dancer: Ernie Wan's Chinese New Year by Kate Waters and Madeline Slovenz-Low. The book provides rich vibrant real photographs about the Chinese New Year.

We also made dragon puppets and danced the Lion Dance with our puppets!!!
