A writing prompt for the Eric Carle book, plus two cross-curricular activities

  • Grades: PreK–K, 1–2

Curriculum Crossovers:

1. On strips of paper, measure off the size of some of the animals that Grouchy Ladybug encounters. Have the children draw a picture of the animal on the appropriate length strip, then find items in the class that are near the size of each animal.

  • Firefly: 15 mm
  • Aphid: 8 mm
  • Ladybug: 8 mm
  • Yellow jacket: 25 mm
  • Stay Beetle: 4 cm
  • Praying Mantis: 10 cm
  • House Sparrow: 15 cm
  • Lobster: 50 cm
  • Skunk: 45 cm

2. Write a class story using the different words that describe Grouchy Ladybug meeting the different animals: flew, met, saw, came across, bumped, spotted, happened upon, ran into, and encountered.

3. Encourage the children to move like the animals in the book. Ask the children to describe how they feel when they move like different animals.
