National Institutes of Health
In a press release issued April 2000, the National Institutes of Health summarized the results of their research on how children learn reading. One of the major findings was that effective reading instruction includes phonics instruction.

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
In 1997, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development reported on the results of over 30 years of research on reading. Among the findings was that children who are not phonemically aware develop an inability that the distinguishing characteristic of persons with reading disabilities.

US Department of Education's National Institute for Literacy
This government site provides basic information on phonics instruction in addition to highlights from evidence-based research.

American Psychological Society
This press release issued January 2002 provides information on the American Psychological Society report indicating that the best approach to elementary-school level reading education is to make phonics the major component of the curriculum.
