3 Questions for Matt Phelan
Illustrator Matt Phelan answers three questions about Around the World and adventures
- Grades: PreK–K, 1–2, 3–5
Why were you drawn to the adventurers featured in Around the World?
I guess I’ve always liked the romantic notion of traveling alone, of going on an adventure. In my early 20s, I wandered around Spain for a month and discovered that, personally, solo travel wasn’t for me. However, that didn’t lessen my interest in other people’s adventures. I was drawn to books about each of these extraordinary people over the course of many years, each bought and read out of sheer interest in their accomplishments.
Are there any modern-day adventurers whom you admire? Why?
In the modern era, I would have to say the original astronauts. It is still mind-boggling what they accomplished with the technology of their time. And the sheer courage to get in those capsules and (hopefully) blast off into outer space is extremely impressive.
What’s been your greatest adventure so far?
