Scholastic’s “Write It: Short Fiction,” for older students, incorporates interactive tutorials, exercises, publishing opportunities, message boards, and creative ideas – all meant to help students hone their short-fiction writing skills.

  • Brainstorm: These strategies help students fire up their imaginations and draw ideas for their fiction from art, life, the news, award-winning stories, and “shadow fiction.”
  • Draft: Students learn how to develop characters, create conflict in their stories, draft dialogue, and transform memories into tales.
  • Review: Students learn to evaluate and improve their own work, as well as get – and give – meaningful feedback.
  • Revise: Now’s the time to review their stories through the lens of the reader.
  • Polish: How to fine-tune stories by making sure all the nitty-gritty (from punctuation to grammar) are in order.
  • Publish: A unique opportunity for students to become published poets! Here, they submit their completed work to Scholastic.com.

Plus:

  • Students can Chat with Fellow Writers to get feedback on their writing.
  • Jocelyn, 17, shares her work of short fiction called “A Small Taste of Normalcy.”

Learning Objectives

  • Students study short fiction by reading and responding to mentor texts.
  • Students may use this interactive site to develop and publish his/her own short story.
