Scholastic’s “Write It: Memoir,” for older students, incorporates interactive tutorials, exercises, publishing opportunities, message boards, and creative ideas – all meant to help students find their voice and develop their craft as they bring their work from memories to memoirs.

  • Brainstorm: Where to begin? Students learn to tap into their memories and emotions. Plus, renowned author Frank McCourt offers tips on writing in the first person.
  • Draft: These four exercises help students start crafting the first draft of their memoirs.
  • Review: Students learn to see their memoirs through fresh eyes with these ideas and techniques.
  • Revise: Students gain perspective on their work with help from these exercises, including how to revise a memoir like E.B. White!
  • Polish: How to fine-tune memoirs, from grammar to punctuation.
  • Publish: A unique opportunity for students to become published poets! Here, they submit their completed work to Scholastic.com.

Plus:

  • Students can Chat with Fellow Writers to get feedback on their writing.
  • Jessica, 18, shares her memoir called “Vueltas."

Learning Objectives

  • Students read and respond to examples of memoirs.
  • Students may use this interactive site to develop and publish their own memoirs.
