Sports: A Math Hunt Activity

Students hunt down the stats and facts they need to solve math-related problems about sports — scoring points for each correct answer!

Ready, set, go! In “Sports” (grades 5–8), an online learning activity from Scholastic’s Math Hunt series, students take off on a fact-finding mission to answer five math problems about the Baseball Hall of Fame, ancient chariot races, and more.

 

In addition to challenging students’ reading comprehension skills, “Sports” tests these “math hunting” skills:

 

  • Addition/Subtraction
  • Averages
  • Converting Units of Measurement
  • Decimals & Percentages
  • Geometry
  • Multiplication/Division

 

Sample Question:

If a player retires in 2005 and leads a safe and healthy life, when is the soonest he can be inducted into the Hall of Fame?

c.     2025

 

 

Learning Objectives

 

By participating in Math Hunt, students will:

  • Practice problem-solving skills from the grade 5-8 math curriculum
  • Explore topics from the grades 5-8 science and social studies curriculum
  • Learn basic Internet research skills
  • Develop an understanding of the construction of standardized test questions and multiple-choice answers
