In “Income” (grades 5–8), an online learning activity from Scholastic’s Math Hunt series, students research the answers to common income-related problems, including how much to charge for a job, what makes a tax deduction, why banks are safe places to save money, and more.

“Income” challenges students’ reading comprehension skills and their addition and subtraction skills:

Sample Question:

Let’s say you want to offer to rake leaves or mow lawns for extra money. What’s a good way to figure out how much to charge?

a. Check with your friends and others.

b. Ask your parents how much they make at their jobs, and charge that much.

c. Charge the same amount as the price of the items you wish to buy with your earnings.
