History Mystery Student Activity

Students are challenged to figure out a mystery person, place, event, or object in history — using the fewest number of clues possible.

In “History Mystery,” the engaging Professor Carlotta Facts challenges students to determine the mystery subject she is studying, using clues she gives them.

Each activity focuses on a particular theme in U.S. or world history and contains either four or five clues. Students can use online or offline research to help identify the mystery person, place, event, or object in history. 

Choose an activity from one of these U.S. history topics:

  • African-American History (including the Colonial period and civil rights)
  • Environmental History
  • Government and Politics (including presidents, states, and the Bill of Rights)
  • Inventions and Technology (including inventors and space explortation)
  • Social and Cultural History (including Native American culture)
  • Women’s History

Or pick an activity from one of these world history topics:

  • Exploration
  • Inventions and Technology (including the Industrial Revolution)
  • World Civilizations (including ancient Egypt, west African kingdoms, and World War II)

 

Learning Objectives

By participating in History Mystery, students will:

  • Use problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Analyze clues
  • Explore topics and events from the 4-8 social studies curriculum
  • Use search terms to conduct Internet research
  • Use an online interactive form
