Dinosaur Write: A Dinosaurs! Activity

Instead of writing a report on dinosaurs, Scholastic challenges students to write something unexpected, like a poem, mystery, or biography.

In Scholastic’s “Dinosaur Write” activity (grades 3–5), students can show what they’ve learned about dinosaurs in an unusual way. Instead of writing a report, Scholastic challenges them to get creative and write something unexpected.

First, students pick a genre: They could write a dinosaur poem, a newspaper article about a dinosaur, a journal entry about the day in the life of a dinosaur, a dinosaur biography, a dinosaur myth, or even a dinosaur mystery! The trick is that all the dinosaur information has to be true.

  • Write your own: Students should write using this form. Their writing must include at least three dinosaur facts, and can be about a single dinosaur, or more than one. They could include details like the dinosaur’s size, dinosaur diets, how they became extinct, or any other information they know. Students are welcome to conduct research to add to their writing.
  • Read what others wrote: For inspiration, students can read dinosaur short stories, poems, interviews, and more, written by other kids. Choose by grade or genre.
