Interactive Timeline: A 100 Years of Flight Activity

This timeline on the history of flight, starting with the first balloon launch in 1783, offers students a chronological frame of reference.

Part of the 100 Years of Flight project, Scholastic’s “Interactive Timeline” activity offers students a chronological frame of reference on the history of flight. 

The timeline begins with the first balloon launch in 1783 by two Frenchmen and continues with 40 more highlights throughout the 1800 and 1900s, including:

  • 1848: John Stringfellow (English) constructed the first successful power-driven model airplane.
  • 1903: Wright brothers made first sustained, controlled flights in powered heavier-than-air craft at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
  • 1932: Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic solo.
  • 1949: A USAF B-50, Lucky Lady II, completed first nonstop round-the-world flight.
  • 1970: Boeing 747’s made first commercial flights.
  • 1998: Steve Fossett flew a record distance in his balloon, Solo Spirit.
