Farmers have been making scarecrows to protect their crops for more than 3,000 years! Some of the first scarecrows were made in Greece and ancient Egypt. Some farmers carved ugly wooden statues. Others dressed poles in rags and bells to scare away birds and other animals.
In the fall, the leaves of some trees change colors from green to orange, yellow, and red. What causes the change? As the days become shorter during autumn and winter, trees produce less chlorophyll. Chlorophyll helps trees turn sunlight into nutrients. It also gives leaves their green color. With less chlorophyll, the leaves no longer look green.
