We Serve Children
- Grades: PreK–K, 1–2, 3–5, 6–8, 9–12
The majority of men and women choose teaching as a profession because they want to help children in elementary, middle, and high school. Teachers know that they serve children and that their job is to develop children’s curiosity, their thirst for information, and their ability to read, write, think, and speak in all subjects. The question I ask is will teaching to one test create creative, innovative, and knowledgeable students—learners who can tackle the issues and problems of the twenty-first century and beyond? Frightened for their jobs, teachers and administrators will focus all their energy on test-prep rather than deep learning and teaching students to read deeply and widely and write well. We serve children, and that means that we expand students’ learning, not diminish it by drilling for success on state and/or Common Core tests. This is a dilemma we all face and must wrestle with, but it’s always crucial to remember that we serve children!
