Room to Read partners with local communities throughout the developing world to establish schools, libraries, and other educational infrastructure. The organization seeks to intervene early in the lives of children in the belief that education is a lifelong gift that empowers people to ultimately improve socioeconomic conditions for their families, communities, countries, and future generations. Through the opportunities that only an education can provide, Room to Read strives to break the cycle of poverty, one child at a time.

Room to Read operates through a unique challenge grant model, allowing local communities to participate in the establishment of its programs, and hires members of the local community to implement its work. Room to Read operates the School Room, Reading Room, Local Language Publishing, Computer Room and Room to Grow programs in the following countries: Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Vietnam and Zambia.

To avoid what some call the “Summer Slide”— a common loss of skills attributed to being out of school for a period of time – last summer "Today" and Scholastic launched "Al's Book Club For Kids," a series to keep kids engaged in reading all summer long and all year long. To celebrate Scholastic Summer Reading Buzz! this year, each month over the summer Al Roker is helping to get kids reading "Four or More" books to combat the summer slide.

"Al's Book Club For Kids" plans to meet four times, and kids everywhere are encouraged to visit "Today" on the Plaza when the club convenes and bring a copy of Al's monthly pick to be signed by the author. "Al's Book Club For Kids" has extensive online components at Todayshow.com. Parents and kids alike from across the country can be part of the club by emailing questions for the authors, who will answer a select few live on "Today." Todayshow.com will continue the discussions with the author online after each book club segment airs. For more information visit www.todayshow.com.
