Centralia Contest In a two-paragraph response, students describe the costs—financial and otherwise—of Centralia, Pennsylvania’s underground coal fire. Prize: Five winners will each receive a copy of Kit’s Wilderness by David Almond.
Extreme Contest
Students compare modern teens’ extreme adventures to those of Marco Polo and explain their opinion about whether or not kids should be allowed to undertake dangerous expeditions. Prize: Five winners will each get A Girl Named Disaster by Nancy Farmer.
King Arthur Contest What qualities make a good king? How does Arthur demonstrate those qualities? Students respond to these questions using details from Scope’s adaptation of the classic Arthurian legend The Sword in the Stone. Prize: Five winners will each get a copy of The Invisible Tower by Nils Johnson-Shelton.
You Write It Contest Using information from the infographic on page 24, students craft a paragraph that makes the case for potbellied pigs as pets. Prize: Three winners will each get a $25 Visa gift card. We will publish the winning entries on Scope Online.

Lisa Yee Contest You Write It Contest
Resistance Contest Students consider the role of information in Nazi Germany and explain how a group of boys used information to fight the Nazis. Prize: Five winners will each receive a copy of The Boy Who Dared by Susan Campbell Bartoletti.
Oz Contest How does Oz achieve greatness? What obstacles does he encounter along the way and from whom does he receive help? Students respond to these questions using details from the play. Prize: Five winners will each get a copy of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.
Fast Food Contest Synthesizing information from “Goat Cheese and Big Macs” and “McTaco vs. Fried Crickets,” students identify McDonalds’s international marketing strategies and explain why some believe that the restaurant can threaten cultural traditions. Prize: Five winners will each get Big Mouth by Deborah Halverson.
Lisa Yee Contest What do “Girl Can’t Dance” and “Surviving YouTube” say about fame today? Students respond, supporting their ideas with evidence from the texts. Prize: Five winners will each get a copy of Warp Speed by Lisa Yee.
You Write It Contest Students transform our interview with 16-year-old farmer and blogger Orren Fox into an article. Prize: Three winners will each get a $25 Visa gift card. We will publish the winning entries on Scope Online.
