Scope Vocabulary

Build students’ vocabularies with our suite of activities!

  • Themed Vocabulary—now with an amazing interactive Teacher’s Guide!
Organizing vocabulary from a Scope article by theme helps students retain new words as well as build relationships between words they already know. Check out the current issue’s Themed Vocabulary activity, which covers words associated with exploration and adventure that students will encounter in our paired-texts feature “Extreme Teens.” The interactive Teacher’s Guide will explain exactly how to use this activity in your classroom.

  • Vocabulary in Context
This activity features a list of tricky words from a Scope article (these words also appear in bold in the article), with pronunciations, definitions, and example sentences. It also includes a review activity to reinforce understanding. Click to see the Vocabulary in Context activities in the current issue: “The Burning Town”, The Sword in the Stone, and “Should Barry Bonds Be in the Hall of Fame?”

  • DIY Vocabulary
We know it’s important for students to be able to use context clues to tackle new words—and this graphic organizer will help them do just that! In this activity, students identify unfamiliar vocabulary in a Scope article, use context clues to determine meanings, look up formal definitions, and use each new word in a sentence. Use it with any Scope story. Click here to download this activity.
