Budget Tips for the Big Island
Five ways to cut vacation costs from CheapOAir travel expert Bill Miller
- Rent a car. It will save you the shuttle fees to and from your hotel, and you’ll want to explore the large, driver-friendly island anyway. It’s full of attractions and activities that are less expensive than most offered by the major resorts.
- Fill your gas tank in larger cities like Hilo and Kona. Because of Hawaii’s gas cap laws, fuel is significantly more expensive in small towns.
- Stock up on supplies like jugs of water, snacks, and even souvenirs at a large grocery store or Walmart. They carry many of the same goods that local shops do but at much lower prices.
- Since resort restaurants on the Big Island tend to be expensive, ask around to find out where the locals eat. The Waimea area, also known as Kamuela, has some fun, reasonably priced, and delicious spots, like the Parker Ranch Grill. Get fresh fruit on the cheap from local farmers’ markets.
- Venture into nature! There are many outdoor activities that are either free or low cost. Visit the Kohala Forest Preserve near Kamuela or Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. If you’re near Hilo, stop at Rainbow Falls or the Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo (free admission!).
