Reading Is Fundamental

Literacy Champion Spotlight

Literacy is the foundation for learning, for success in school and for happiness in life. Yet for millions of children, that foundation is never built. The majority of kids living in poverty don’t own a single book – a predictor of educational defeat.

For more than four decades, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) has been tackling this problem and helping ensure that books and reading are a part of every child’s life – distributing more than 400 million free, new books to more than 35 million children since 1966.

Now the organization is launching a multi-year initiative focusing on the intersection of early childhood literacy and science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics – or STEAM – themes.

“The next Mark Zuckerberg may be that 8-year-old child RIF serves whose only books are the ones we provide,” said Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO of RIF. “The skills today’s students need to succeed as tomorrow’s pioneers should start at the earliest possible opportunity with an approach that builds on their natural curiosity. As a country, we’re missing the mark with few resources explicitly aimed at STEAM education for our youngest students.”

RIF will be distributing free STEAM-themed books and resources throughout the campaign, aiming to spark a love for reading and learning critical skills for tomorrow’s workforce.

Magic happens when you give books to children: eyes sparkle, smiles emerge and imaginations come alive. That’s the mission embraced by RIF — to motivate children in need to have a lifelong, life-changing love of reading. Simply put, the books RIF provides allows children to dream big.
