Paws for Healing

Literacy Champion Spotlight

Paws for Healing (PFH) is a nonprofit organization run completely by volunteers, which trains and certifies canine-assisted therapy teams (CAT).  These CAT teams then participate in various PFH programs designed to help people in community hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care and educational facilities. Through its Paws for Reading literacy program, PFH places volunteers and their dogs in classrooms and libraries.  The children gain a sense of comfort and confidence by reading to the dogs.

In October, PFH teamed up with Scholastic Book Clubs to extend their Paws for Reading program into a fun new challenge: Children across the country were invited to join either the Cats or Dogs team, and spend at least 20 minutes a day reading at home for their team. By logging their minutes online, readers contribute to their team’s score. For every 20 minutes logged, Scholastic Book Clubs’ ClassroomCare program is committed to donating 1 book to a child in need, up to 1 million books. Meanwhile, downloadable rewards, crafts, and activities help teachers and parents motivate their kids to keep reading.

Since this challenge began, PFH and Scholastic have reached their target donation of 1 million books, and the Paws for Reading teams have logged a combined total of over 117 million reading minutes! The great success of this competition means that participating readers have gained a new sense of confidence through books, while also sharing the gift of reading with so many other children during the 2012 holiday season.
