Literacy Champion Spotlight

Engaging, well-crafted books are out of reach for many children in developing Asia, where children’s books are often unaffordable and few countries in the region have the types of robust domestic publishing industries that produce children’s books for reading outside the classroom.

To bridge this gap, The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia program donates approximately 1 million books a year to 7,500 educational institutions. The program has resident staff across Asia who collaborate with exemplary local partners to ensure donated books reach those who need them most.

One such partner is PACOS, an organization that seeks to improve the lives of indigenous communities in rural Sabah, Malaysia, by supplementing traditional village life with quality education. Located on the island of Borneo and separated from peninsular Malaysia by the South China Sea, Sabah’s stark classrooms have limited resources and lack inspiring reading material.

Together, Books for Asia and PACOS to ship more than 18,000 books to Sabah. When they arrived at Sabah’s main port, the books were trekked over hundreds of miles of bumpy, muddy unpaved roads to reach some of the state’s most far-flung corners. An estimated 120 schools quickly put the books to use to help level the learning field between rural and urban Malaysians.

The Books for Asia collaboration with PACOS is just one example of its ability to provide valuable assistance to an estimated 9 million people each year. For more information go to www.booksforasia.org
