• Use these organizers on the Interactive Whiteboard to model how to complete the sections after reading a text during a craft study unit, or before writing.

The resources on this page are for use on your Interactive Whiteboard. Most teachers have one of the following types of whiteboards:

• SMART Board
• Promethean: ActivBoard

When you find a resource you would like to use on your whiteboard, simply click the appropriate yellow button to the right of the description. A dialog box will appear, asking you to "open or save" the resource.

Clicking "open" will prompt you to select the program you would like to use to load the resource. For SMART users, please select the SMART Notebook program from your programs list - for Promethean users, please select the ActiveInspire program.

Clicking "save" will allow you to save the resource to your computer - please select the location you would like to save to.

FOR USERS WHO DON’T HAVE AN INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARD:

You can still project this resource or use it in "full screen" mode on a display. Simply click the "Fullscreen view" link and a new window will open.

• List topic ideas around the organizer. Have students drag and drop the ideas in the appropriate circles using the arrows as clues. (Notice there are 3 levels of topics on the organizer. Topics should be more narrowed down as you proceed towards the outer circle.)

• Use on Interactive Whiteboard to model how to revise a piece of writing by adding details to clarify ideas and delete details that are unnecessary. Students can then complete a printed copy of organizer to revise their own piece of writing.

• Keep this organizer up on the Interactive Whiteboard during and independent reading block after a lesson on identifying emotion in a story. Invite students to write examples on the board as they come across emotions during the reading period. Clone the page several times so more students are able to add examples. Limit them to one addition as to not interrupt their reading too much. Discuss the examples after reading time is over.

• Use this organizer during a writer's workshop mini lesson during the editing stage to assist students with expanding simple sentences. Model on the Smartboard, and then have students practice on their own or with a writing partner.

• Create words that appeal to the senses and place them at the bottom of the graphic organizer. The students can then drag them into the appropriate places.
• This graphic organizer can also be used to pick out sensory words in a piece or writing or to encourage students to think about sensory words to use in their own writing. Students can write the words in digital ink. A great tool for whole class brainstorming.
