Use Measuring Cups to Teach Fractions

Create your own hands-on learning lab using standard measuring cups. Tell your child that you'd like to help him explore fractions, and give him several different measuring cups, such as the 1/8 cup, 1/4 cup, 1/3 cup, 1/2 cup, and 1-cup sizes. Let him experiment with how the cups relate to one another, by pouring water or small pieces of pasta into the largest measuring cup. How many of the 1/4-cup scoop does it take to full the 1-cup measuring cup? How many 1/3-cup scoops? Encourage your child to verbalize his conclusions.
