Sum it Up to Find the Main Idea
On reading tests, one of the questions that comes up often is, "What is the main idea of this paragraph?" To help, instruct your child to underline the subject and main verbs of each sentence in the first paragraph. Then, have him sum up all of those nouns and verbs into one clear phrase to determine the point of just that paragraph, and write it in the margin.
